When a past or sitting senator is nominated, senatorial courtesy is an unwritten rule that allows him or her to be quickly confirmed.  Also, senatorial courtesy is the unwritten rule that a nomination will not be confirmed if the senator of the president's party from the state of which the nominee is a citizen does not agree with the nomination.
